That massive center over the ball at an old Iowa State University football practice is Chris Taylor, a 2-time NCAA heavyweight wrestling champion for the Cyclones. Taylor tipped the scales at 412 pounds in the days before the NCAA imposed a weight limit. He also won a bronze medal in Freestyle at the 1972 Munich Summer Games.
Originally from Dowagiac, MI, Taylor first attended Muskegon Community College before matriculating to Ames. Please find at this link a lovely retrospective on Taylor’s time at Iowa State from the Des Moines Register. Following a brief professional wrestling career, Taylor died in 1979 at just 29 years of age.
In 2012 he was enshrined in both the Iowa State Wrestling Hall of Fame and the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. You’re able to see a video tribute to Taylor that was produced in conjunction with the National Wrestling HoF honor below. Also below is video of an early professional match against Ric Flair.
