I first became aware of the Grand Forks (ND) Herald‘s college hockey writer, Brad Schlossman, from his cousin, Paul.

Paul’s the Fargo-based photography artist who’s creating some fabulous imagery utilizing Starting Lineup and MacFarlance sports figurines. He was my guest earlier this season in Episode 16. You’re able to find Paul’s work on his website here. (If you’re looking for holiday gifts for your favorite sports blogger and podcaster, well, all I’m saying is I love “Man of Steal,” “Sweetness Fog,” and “Magic vs. Bird.” Just saying;-)

Anyhow, when I spoke with Paul, he mentioned that his cousin, Brad, was the longtime college hockey writer at the Herald. I tucked that away in the back of my mind for when the next college hockey season rolled around.

Well, as days get shorter and the temperatures grow chillier, it must be hockey season. The college season began in early October and Brad’s been on it from before the start.

Brad’s been at the Herald since 2003 when he interned there and then succeeded longtime hockey writer, Virg Foss, in 2005. His primary role at the paper has been covering the North Dakota Fighting Hawks.

My time with Brad also served as a bit of a trip down Memory Lane for me, a former college hockey writer during my days at The Ann Arbor News and the Fairbanks (AK) Daily News-Miner. It was lovely to get an update on the current landscape of the expanding expanding sport.
