Doug worked with Karl Bates at the Ann Arbor News during the early 1990s, but the two lost contact with one another after several years. A mutual friend reconnected them for this Conversation and was it a blast! Karl, now an employee at Duke University in Durham, NC, shares tales from his time growing up in Lansing to working at newspapers throughout the midwest to seeing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s final game, Aaron Rodgers’ final game as a Green Bay Packer, and how different Cameron Indoor Stadium is from the Dean E. Smith Events Center. Oh yeah, as the uncle of international ice dancer Evan Bates, he also about what it’s like to watch high level ice dancing.
