Doug first met Grant when the two were students at Eastern Michigan University. Grant was the star of the 1987-88 Mid-American Conference championship basketball team and Doug the Managing Editor of the student paper, the Eastern Echo. The two reminisce during this Conversation and Grant, who was the second-ever draft pick by the expansion Miami Heat in 1988, reveals what it was like having an uncle (John Long) who was a college standout at the University of Detroit before becoming a Detroit Piston. (Hint: Grant enjoyed going to see Uncle John play, but not for the reasons you might think.) Also of note, we learn of Grant’s love of baseball and how much meeting Hall of Famer Hank Aaron meant to him.
