The NBA was a different game back in the late 1980s and early 1990s. As Olivia Newton-John might have sang, “Let’s Get Physical.”
During Game 2 of the Miami Heat-Atlanta Hawks 1994 Eastern Conference first-round playoff series, the game became increasingly more physical until tempers finally boiled over late in third quarter. Miami’s Grant Long (Conversations with Sports Fans guest S:1, E:22) fouled Atlanta’s Duane Ferrell and it was game-on … so to speak.

Long was ejected, fined $10,000, and suspended for the a game. Ferrell received no penalty.
Interestingly enough, Long was traded by the Heat to the Hawks the following season. By that time, Ferrell had signed with the Indiana Pacers, thus avoiding a potentially awkward re-introduction.
