Host Doug Hill was unfamiliar with author Will Bardenwerper before a random wander through a local Barnes & Noble back in May. In the new release section was Bardenwerper’s latest release, Homestand: Small Town Baseball and the Fight for the Soul of America. As Doug leafed through the pages and he determined this would be an enjoyable read. When he discovered it was on the shelf at his local library a few weeks later, he dove in head first. By the fourth chapter, Doug knew he’d reach out to Will about joining him on Conversations. The result is this discussion, about Will’s sports fandom while growing up in the Washington, D.C., area, his decision to join the U.S. Army following the 9/11 attacks, and, of course, how Homestand came to be.
