Lew Freedman was the sports editor of the Anchorage Daily News while Doug worked in the sports department in Fairbanks from 1993-94. If memory serves, the two met on a couple of occasions and spoke on the phone a few more, but not for close to 30 years. Lew was referred to Doug as a resource on the Iditarod – he’s authored several books on the topic – and provides a wealth of information in this episode.
