Conversations with Sports Fans – S1, E21: Ken Kal

Detroit Red Wings Logo

When Doug took over the University of Michigan ice hockey beat at the Ann Arbor News in the early 1990s, Ken was the radio voice of the Wolverines. The two spent quite a lot of time in press boxes and on road trips together from 1991-93. The two hadn’t spoken since the mid-1990s but picked up right where they left off. Ken shares tales of woe as a long-suffering Detroit Lions fan, that time he played baseball at Tiger Stadium, and offers a memorable recollection of his job interview with Detroit Red Wings’ owner Mike Illitch as he attempted (successfully!) to become the voice of the Detroit Red Wings.
