The Fan Teaser: Week 84 Solution

This was neither the first nor the most-recent 59 in pro golf, but it’s still
unique in its own right. Whose right hand is this?

There have been 14 sub-60 rounds shot during U.S. professional golf history. The first was by Al Geiberger in 1977 at the Danny Thomas Memphis Classic. The most-recent was by Scottie Scheffler at the 2020 Northern Trust.

In between, Annika Sorenstam became the first – and still only! – woman to go that low. She shot her 59 during the second round of the Standard Register Ping Championship at Moon Valley Country Club in Phoenix back in 2001.

Sorenstam basically owned the LPGA during the 2000s so it comes as little surprise that she’d have been the first to shoot a 59. Here’s a terrific pictorial retrospective of Sorenstam’s career.

Similarly, Golf Digest gives all sub-60 rounds its treatment with an interesting look at each occurrence.

Sorenstam remembers the day she went lower than any woman before or after.
