Back in the day, NFL players used a material called Stickum to aid their ability to catch the ball. One of the earliest proponents of the substance was Oakland Raiders’ wide receiver, Fred Biletnikoff, whom we learned in this week’s episode of Conversations with Sports Fans, played high school football in Erie, PA, against our guest, Bill Pepicello.
Stickum was banned by the NFL in 1981 – thanks, primarily, to Biletnikoff’s teammate, Lester Hayes – but rumors persisted that other used it after the fact, including Jerry Rice.
