Hockey fans of a certain age will get this before you can say Derek Sanderson.
It is among the most-famous photographs in the history of sport. Boston Bruins all-everything defenseman Bobby Orr hurtling through the air after scoring the 1970 Stanley Cup-clinching goal against the St. Louis Blues the first minute into overtime of Game 4.
The photo, it turns out, was sort of an accident. The photographer, Ray Lussier from the Boston Record-American, allegedly wasn’t even credentialed for the game and found his way to that side of the rink when he noticed the photographer assigned there stepped out for, it turns out, a beer. As the game ended in the first minute of overtime, by the time the other photographer had returned, Lussier’d already captured his famous shot. You can read about the story behind the photo here.
